A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
