Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
