"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the Haim sisters?" an inquiry reads. "I wanted to ask if I can be their extra sister."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also desires to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. A host of celebrated fans have publicly coveted the position.

It's clear a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the greatest bands, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals often depict them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate others to start a band."

"So all is invited to be the next Haim sister."

Grammy Milestone

The group are speaking from a break, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the honor is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," continues Alana. "However we're just thankful for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The words follow breakups and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them working out in the moment who they are becoming.

"I adore description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Style

That recent confidence called for a different sonic direction – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The band's openness fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their dating horror stories.

Someone left Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide following.

But the band will forever be their primary commitment.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "There is no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still kicking."
