Exactly 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story movie debuted, launching the animation giant as a major animation studio and bringing audiences to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.

In 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a brief look into the plot but leaving fans wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Spooks the Toys

The preview reveals Bonnie — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a brand new toy, one that alarms the familiar toy group. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters appear to consider it as a danger coming to replace them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is what the sheriff is back with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and assisting prize toys locate loving owners.

Certainly, Pixar will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have returned with him. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Last Installment

Fortunately, some aspects are continuing from the prior film. The final act Woody did before departing for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), entrusting her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip shows the badge pinned to her shirt.

Hopefully she is still the driving force among the toys.
